I had this occur to my personal Username once last week, but my server doesn't support flock, and I had my permissions set really high. Therefore, it could have been a flock issue or a malignant hacker-wannabe, I'm not sure. But I do know that since the upgrade to beta2, at which time I reduced my permissions to 711, I haven't had the problem again.

Ick. Have you checked with your webhost to see if their servers support the FLOCK command?

I'm another one with this problem.. i registered myself on my board, made myself to the moderator in every forum, wrote my first message and then my name disappeared including the profile..i can't delete the account and register myself again because cC tells me that the name doesn't exist even though a blank field (formerly my name) appears in the member list..i just want to delete my old name but i'm afraid that will happen again..

I got a good provider and a fast connection..where the hell is the problem??

We're still trying to determine exactly what is causing this problem. As this is a beta product, there are bound to be bugs... it just seems that this is one of the more pernicious ones...

AS for your problem in specific, if you want to delete your corrupted memberfile, just delete it via FTP, then do a Recount (which is found in your 'Admin Control Panel ---> Board Utilities' section). This will remove the member name, and allow you to re-register it. If you plan to use the same e-mail address as before, though (when you re-register), you'll have to delete it from the list in your "emails.txt" file, then re-upload the altered file to your webhost. It is found in the TXT folder.

I'm another with this same problem - It has happened twice in the last week(Alhtough the boards been up and fine since 2.0 cam out. I have a good host, flock is fully supported and yet the problemn still persists.

I have been a great fan of CC but unless a fix is found I'll have to find a new board as it's taking me nearly an hour out of my day every time this happens.

just switch back to cc1.2 which is highly stable for me!

and later you can convert the databases to the (hopefully) stable cc 2.0

This is usually the case... Not directed to you Norbert99 in any way - DO NOT choose a cheap host or a 'free' for the masses host.
It usually ends up messy... I am glad it worked for you Norbert99, having said that - there are so many others with 'similar' problems.

On a daily basis I browse through various 'hosting' boards, hundreds of comments like;
Do you know of any free hosts? I can't do this I can't do that, My host just 'cut me off' just like that,
Where can I find a good host? - bla bla bla....

People seem to think that paying $5 will give them everything.

Sorry, just had to shout... seeing too many 'wannebe' hosts lately.

What host do you recommend, I'm think of using this software for an AUTOMOTIVE board, I'm part of a discussion board and they are having problems with the new version, I'm trying to help them out pinpoint the problems!!!

I had the same problem with version 2 beta2 last night. What should I do?
Few days ago my forum crashed with beta 1 and I made an update to beta 2.
And now I have the same problem. Some of the userfiles are corrupt and the forum.db file and some threads have now a size of 0 bytes. I have no idea anymore.

I'm having the same problem. Members' files randomly empty and the members have to re-register under a different member name. We are not on a free (or cheap) server. Our program was installed by ArtsCore. v2.0 BETA 2

I just lost one forum and when I tried to fix it 3 more boards duplicated and screwed up my board.

CuteCast has a problem with random deletion of files and nobody is doing nothing about it.

I have to many users to switch the board but this is crazy!

From shakked - February 12, 2003 @ 09:49:34
on yesterday evening there were 8 members at the same time online and posted in a hour over 150 postings into my forum. near all 10 minutes there were an empty, in binary-code saved, memberprofile which i must overwrite with one from my backup (i have a backup of all memberfiles on my hdd at home). i also tryed to download the "corrupted", much more bigger memberfile as before, in ascii mode and my ftp-client shows me a message that i actually download a binary (!!!) file in ascii mode.

any news with this problem? iŽm running cc1.2 all the time but i wish that i can upgrade in the near future to cc2.0

greetings!!!

mark.

Well guys it may be to early to tell but so far so good. My host made some changes on their end and things seem to be running smoothly, before it was hit and miss on whether the board would open right up, hang for up to 20 seconds or not open at all, now it pops right up every time. I was also having problems with the hits report function, it only worked 1 out of 15 tries, now so far its been 100%. It will be a few days before I'll know if it fixed the file problem but so far its looking good. My guess is my server was unstable, and having some minor hiccups while cutecast was updating files, causing the data to get lost or scrambled, this is only a guess and since I know next to nothing about this stuff take it for what its worth.

I started this thread a long long time ago, knock on wood... my forum has been running smooth since Netfirms changed some settings on their end back on Jan. 26 2003. This leads me to believe it has nothing to do with CuteCast and everything to do with the host.

This seems to be the case. Two causes have been hunted down for these random deletions and corrupted files:

1) Using non-standard characters in a Username. Standard characters being "A" through "Z" (case doesn't matter) and any numbers.

2) The webserver being used not fully supporting the *nix command FLOCK. When two or more users try to write to a file, and file-locking (FLOCK) is not working on the server, strange things like this happen.

Neither of these problems is a flaw with CuteCast. I would like to see the final version of CC 2 restrict the use of non-standard characters in Usernames, but beyond that, there isn't much that can be done on this end, as far as I know.

Obviously, this is a very frustrating problem... I've had to deal with it myself, when I used Netfirms, although I understand they have improved recently. At that time, my only recourse was to leave cheap hosts behind, and find a good webhosting company that actually supports FLOCK (and doesn't just claim to do so, hoping you don't really need it). It took a while to find such a host, but they are out there. If you are having this problem, ask around to other users, and I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions for decent hosting companies.

Hello,

I have the same accidentally occuring problem - user files emptying themselves. Sometimes it's just one, maybe two. A skeleton of the user-file is always available, but if you open it, it may only say:

level:PVT
totalposts:234

I'm determing now if it's occuring while members make changes to their user profiles (changing avatar, signatures, etc.), because yesterday it happened for the admin after he tried to change the avatar.

Flock is installed, and it's no free host my client signed up. Well, it's Earthlink and it's slow anyway, but normal (expensive) cost.
No one is messing with the files.
I thought of another reason this can happen - could it be that if the host is slowed down, the data isn't written fully?
I just saw that transferring 1 MB via FTP after 4 pm EST takes approx. 20 - 30 minutes on cable!

This has happened to me. It emptied the file of my admin account a month ago, and last night it emptied the files of 3 admin accounts of mine and it looks like 10 user files. As well it emptied the db file of one of my forums.

WTF?!?
